Screen-Free Activities for Kids at Restaurants
Share
Eating out with children can be lovely, but the waiting time can be difficult.
Before the food arrives, children often get bored, restless, or ask for a phone. For many parents, giving them a screen feels like the easiest solution. But sometimes, a simple screen-free activity can keep children busy, calm, and engaged at the table.
Here are three screen-free activities kids can enjoy at restaurants.
1. Bring a Small Coloring and Discovery Kit
A compact coloring activity is one of the easiest things to bring to a restaurant.
Children can sit at the table, choose colors, and focus on one page while they wait for food. It does not need much space, it does not make noise, and it gives children something to do with their hands.
This is exactly why we created Dudo.

Dudo is a screen-free coloring and discovery kit for curious kids. Each page introduces a creature, animal, or small discovery theme, helping children color, notice details, and meet simple English words in a natural way.
Instead of simply keeping children quiet, Dudo gives them something meaningful to explore.
They can color a beetle, look at its shape, learn its name, and ask questions about what they see. For parents, it is easy to carry and simple to use. For children, it feels like play, not study.
A restaurant table becomes a small space for coloring, curiosity, and quiet discovery.

2. Play “I Spy” Around the Table
“I Spy” is a classic game because it needs no materials.
One person chooses something they can see and gives a clue:
“I spy something red.”
“I spy something round.”
“I spy something made of wood.”
Children can look around the restaurant and guess the answer. This keeps them observing their surroundings instead of looking at a screen.
You can also make it educational by using categories:
colors
shapes
letters
animals
foods
numbers
For younger children, keep the clues simple. For older children, make them more specific or ask them to describe their own object.
It is quick, quiet, and easy to play while waiting.
3. Carry a Small Table Toy
A small toy can be very helpful when children need something to do with their hands.
It does not have to be big or expensive. In fact, the best restaurant toys are usually small, quiet, and easy to carry.
You can keep one or two simple items in your bag, such as:
- a small fidget toy
- a mini cube puzzle
- a tiny doll or animal figure
- a few pieces of origami paper
- a small magnetic toy
- a quiet sensory toy
- a pocket-sized building toy

The goal is not to bring a full toy box to the restaurant. The goal is to give your child something small enough to use at the table without making noise or taking up too much space.
For some children, a small fidget toy helps them stay calm while waiting.
For others, a tiny doll or animal figure can become a little friend during the meal.
Origami paper is also useful because children can fold, crease, and create something with their hands.
These small items give children something to touch, move, and focus on without needing a screen.
To make it easier, you can create a “restaurant pouch” with two or three small activities inside. Keep it in your bag and only bring it out when you eat outside. This makes the toys feel special and helps your child look forward to using them.
A Small Activity Can Change the Meal
Children do not always need a screen to stay busy.
Sometimes, they just need something small, simple, and interesting enough to hold their attention.
A coloring kit, a guessing game, or a small table toy can make restaurant waiting time calmer and more enjoyable for everyone.
The goal is not to make every meal perfect.
The goal is to give children another option.
Less screen.
More hands.
More conversation.
More little discoveries.
